OCT – OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY FOR LASER WELDING

Seam tracking – process observation – seam monitoring

The OCT system from Lessmüller Lasertechnik offers completely new possibilities for quality assurance of your welding processes – in real time.

Coaxially coupled into the processing beam or as a stand-alone variant, the OCT performs a highly accurate height profile measurement in the area of the TCP (Tool Center Point). During the active welding process, the component surface is scanned with µm precision at around 70,000 measuring points per second. An image includes areas of the weld butt joint, the molten pool and the cooled seam.

In addition, OCT allows the processing laser head to track the weld joint or seam in a self-controlled manner, independent of the current direction of laser head movement and without prior calibration or predetermined trajectory information.

This allows precise and non-contact seam tracking before the welding process and contour control of the finished seam after the welding process. No other method allows such an economical and highly accurate measurement of the weld penetration depth (keyhole depth) possible during the process.

This opens up the possibility of performing seam tracking (pre-process), process monitoring (in-process) and seam control (post-process) in laser welding (and also soldering) with a single system. Extensive software packages exist for all three application areas, which offer automated evaluation of the measurement data. The flexible adaptation of the evaluation algorithms to your specific tasks is one of our greatest strengths.

Each OCT system is individually configured and parameterized according to the requirements of your processes. All relevant measurement and evaluation data are stored for complete traceability and are available to the user without restriction. Our OCT system is compatible with all common welding optics – scanner optics as well as fixed optics – and supports all common fieldbuses.

Measurement with OCT is direction-independent and can be used omnidirectionally. In addition, the OCT is unaffected by interfering influences such as smoke, stray light or irregularities on the surface, such as scratches.

Advantages with OCT

  • Precise edge detection and seam tracking in any direction  and at any welding angle

  • Online defect detection and auto-correction to reduce scrap production, inspection costs and rework rate

  • Reliable automated detection of defects in the finished weld seam

  • Measurement of the weld penetration depth (keyhole depth) during the welding process

  • Measurement result unaffected by process lights and extraneous light

  • Robust and proven detection and evaluation algorithms

  • Easy adaptation to common laser welding optics with camera connection

  • Robust industrial design: dust-proof construction with robot-towable cable and interfaces

  • Visualization of all relevant measurement and evaluation data for traceability

  • High configurability

Whether integrated into a processing laser or used as a stand-alone, by using the OCT system from Lessmüller Lasertechnik you are making the choice for the most powerful quality assurance for welding processes on the market.

The possibility of using the system for all types of process monitoring, i.e. as a pre-, in-, or post-process, guarantees you the technically best possible welding quality in your manufacturing production according to today’s standards.

The primary task of OCT sensor technology is to avoid incorrect positioning of the processing optics or the laser beam. This can be done before welding by detecting the actual weld seam geometry and making preventive corrections, if necessary, or during welding by continuous, automated readjustment (seam tracking).

Furthermore, the weld penetration depth can be determined and monitored during welding. If defects occur, the ongoing process can be interrupted and defective parts can be prevented from being processed further.

Finally, the OCT from Lessmüller Lasertechnik can even measure the topography of the weld seam and check it for defects, both during and after the welding process.

Reduzierung-Fehlproduktion

Since OCT works independently of extraneous or interfering light, detectability and measurability can already be estimated in the planning phase of impact geometries. There is no need to create complex illumination simulations as for camera systems.

By using OCT for keyhole measurement, it is possible to determine whether the welding process is safe, constant and reliable in the essence during the initial welding tests, even before the feasibility studies. Thus, OCT contributes to the improvement and optimization of welding processes.

For the measurement of the POST process, offline tests can also be made parallel to the still ongoing process development.
